PURPOSE: To provide the compounds comprising specific hydroterphenyl compounds, suitable to nematic phase compositions as an ingredient at liquid crystal derivative compositions having a wide nematic range and a low viscosity, and used as liquid crystal for electro-optical display elements or the like.
CONSTITUTION: After hydrogenating trans-1-P-hydroxyphenyl-4-propylcyclohexane over PtO2, oxidizing with NaOCl and subjecting the product therefrom to a reaction with a compound represented by the formula C6H5MgBr and subsequently to a dehydration by a strong acid in boiling toluene. The formed product is further hydrogenated over PtO, heating the produced cis-trans mixture at 100°C in DMF by adding K-tert.-butyrate, thereby forming hydroterphenyl compounds of formula I, which are compounded with compounds of formula II (A and E are each substituted phenylene, a cyclohexane ring; G is CH=CH, COO or the like; R6 and R7 are each alkyl or the like) thereby obtaining the object liquid crystal compositions. In formula I, R1 is alkyl; R2 is H, halogen, OH, alkyl or the like Cy is 1,4-cyclohexylene; Ph is 1,4-phenylene.
