PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of knocking owing to a delay in controlling the air-fuel ratio by detecting the transition of target air-fuel ratios from the rich, and then making a correction for delaying the ignition timing at the time when such transition is detected.
CONSTITUTION: The air-fuel ratio control is carried out by a means 3 according to a rich target air-fuel ratio and a lean target air-fuel ratio, which are set up by a means 2 in response to the operating state of an engine detected by an operating state detecting means 1, and at the same time, a basic ignition timing is set up by a means 4 corresponding to such target air-fuel ratios. In a device as mentioned above, the transition of the target air-fuel ratios from the rich side to the lean side is detected by a means 5, and then, at the time when such transition is detected, a correction for delaying the ignition timing is made by a means 6. Thereby, at the transitional time when the transition of the target air-fuel ratios from the rich side to the lean side is detected, the ignition timing is controlled so that it suits a request air-fuel ratio required by an actual air-fuel ratio, and therefore, the occurrence of knocking owing to a delay in controlling the air-fuel ratios can be prevented.
