To provide an image display device and a projector which provide a vivid image by compact configuration.
The image display device includes; first optical modulation elements 60R, 60G, and 60B for modulating light emitted from a light source 10; a second optical modulation element 100 which is disposed on an optical path in series to the first optical modulation elements 60R, 60G, and 60B and modulates light emitted from the first optical modulation elements 60R, 60G, and 60B; and a relay optical means which forms optical images of the first optical modulation elements 60R, 60G, and 60B on a light reception face of the second optical modulation element 100 and has an optical path separation element 93 for separating optical paths of light emitted from the first optical modulation elements 60R, 60G, and 60B and at least one lens for guiding light emitted from the optical path separation element 93 toward a reflection part 91. The first optical modulation elements 60R, 60G, and 60B are disposed on a front focal plane of at least one lens, and the reflection part 91 is disposed on a rear focal plane of at least one lens.
