Abstract:
To solve a problem wherein the type of a recording medium and contamination of a carrying belt cannot be dealt with by simply providing a carriage with an optical sensor and detecting the width and position of the recording medium, and the carriage position.
A carriage 3 mounting a recording head 7 is provided with a state sensor 41 employing a reflective photosensor for detecting the state in the vicinity of the carriage. According to the detection results from the state sensor 41, type of a sheet 12 being carried on a carrying belt 21 is detected, and contamination and damage of the carrying belt 21 are detected. Operation is controlled depending on the type of the sheet and cleaning or replacement of the carrying belt 21 is urged.
