To provide an image management apparatus which can overcome disadvantages of a recording medium capable of recording and reproducing only sequential information such as a conventional video tape, and can record and store photographic data of an electronic camera for recording photographed information into a randomly accessible recording medium, as information viewable by a user with a simple operation by using the randomly accessible recording medium as a medium for information recording.

The apparatus automatically forms a menu in which a user can easily designate a several- or several ten-second file generated in photographing in conformity with conditions such as a time range to be photographed, and the image file and the menu are written into a large-capacity writable recording medium. Then, in reproduction, the image management apparatus displays the menu screen, and a user selects an image to be designated while watching the menu screen, and the selected image is displayed.
