PURPOSE: To improve the operability by moving a cartridge to the unload position by an unload instruction and moving the cartridge to the unload position by an eject instruction to eject out the cartridge by an eject mechanism.

CONSTITUTION: The unload instruction is transmitted to a microprocessor 58 through a microprocessor 41, and the cartridge from and on which data is read and written is moved to the unload position by a loading mechanism. When the eject instruction is given, the cartridge is moved to the unload position by a loading mechanism and is ejected out by the eject mechanism. Thus, an information recording and reproducing device of good operability is obtained.
