Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently operate an internal combustion engine operated by premixed-compressed-self-igniting a fuel-air mixture.
SOLUTION: A first fuel-air mixture is formed in a combustion chamber. Next, a second fuel-air mixture is formed by ejecting fuel during a compression stroke and ignited to increase pressure in the combustion chamber, thereby the first fuel-air mixture can be compressed-self-ignited. On a piston top surface, a swirling chamber is arranged at a position opposed to an ignition plug. Fuel spray ejected during the compression stroke is introduced to the inside of the swirling chamber through an introducing groove arranged in the piston top surface so as to form the swirl flow of the second fuel/air mixture in the swirling chamber. The second fuel-air mixture can be closed in the swirling chamber, so that the second fuel-air mixture certainly ignited by only ejecting a small amount of fuel can efficiently be formed. As a result, the internal combustion engine operated by premixed-compressed-self-igniting the fuel-air mixture can be operated efficiently.
