The ladder-type compound is represented by formula (1). In the formula, the ring structures A and B are the same or different and are each an optionally substituted aryl group or an optionally substituted group or an optionally substituted heteroaryl group, and may be each a single ring or a condensed ring of a plurality of rings; X and Y are the same or different and are each a sulfur, oxygen, selenium or tellurium atom, or a group represented by SO2, (R1)-C-(R2), (R3)-Si-(R4) or N-(R5); and Z is a group represented by N-(R6); provided that a compound represented by formula (2) is excluded.
