PURPOSE: To cool a luminous portion so as to equalize the distribution of light supplied form a light source device by providing the device with a rodlike supporting portion provided to at least one side of the luminous portion.
CONSTITUTION: A luminous portion 26 comprises a luminous material which converts electric energy into optical energy to emit luminescence and is sealed into a silica tube 26a. When microwaves are applied to the luminous portion 26 through a radio frequency screen 28, the light emitting material then converts the electric energy into the optical energy to emit luminescence. When a rodlike supporting portion 30 is rotated, a fan 34 is rotated to generate an air current in the centrifugal direction of the rodlike supporting portion 30 therefrom. Where an air current in the axial line direction (the direction of an arrow C) of the rodlike supporting portion 30 can be generated around the silica tube 26a so that the silica tube 26a can be effectively cooled. The distribution of output light supplied from a light source device can thus be equalized to obtain a projection type display having neither unevenness in brightness nor unevenness in color.
