PURPOSE: To provide the liquid crystal display element with which defects, such as display seizure, are prevented by consisting oriented films for controlling the orientation of a liquid crystal layer of org. high polymer introduced with ammonia or amino groups in their surfaces, then, subjecting these oriented films to the ammonia treatment as the film surface treatment.
CONSTITUTION: The oriented films 4 for controlling the orientation of the liquid crystal layer 5 of the liquid crystal display element formed by holding a liquid crystal layer 5 between a pair of substrates 1 and 2 with electrodes 3 consists of org. high polymer introduced with the ammonia or amino group on the surface. An ammonia treatment is executed as the film surface treatment of the oriented films 4 in the process for production of the liquid crystal display element. A method for exposing the films to ammonia vapor and a method for immersing the films into ammonia water are effective as the method for executing the ammonia treatment. The imide ring structures in the polyimide on the surfaces of the oriented films are hydrolyzed by using a basic catalyst in either method. The decomposition in the oriented films is of a problem if the reaction progresses excessively. Then, the selection of reaction conditions, such as reaction time, is important.
