PURPOSE: To provide the liquid crystal display element with which defects, such as display seizure, are prevented by consisting oriented films for controlling the orientation of a liquid crystal layer of org. high polymers introduced with a polyether structure in their surfaces and subjecting these oriented films to a treatment using a surface treating agent having the polyether structures as the film surface treatment for these films.

CONSTITUTION: The oriented films for controlling the orientation of the liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal display element constituted by holding a liquid crystal layer between a pair of substrates with electrodes consists of the org. high polymers introduced with the polyether structures on their surfaces. The treatment using the surface treating agent having the polyether structure is executed as the film surface treatment for these oriented films in the process for production of the liquid crystal display element. The polyether structure is more specifically and preferably the structure expressed by formula. In the formula, n denotes a repeating number and n=2 to 20; R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 denote a hydrogen atom, alkyl group, etc.; R1 to R4 and R5 may bond to form a ring. R2 and R3 or R1, R2, R3 and R4 may bond to form a ring.
