PURPOSE: To obtain a liq. crystal display element enabling clear multicolored numerical display without deteriorating the display performance by dividing a common electrode in an interdigital shape and by forming a striped transparent colored layer in accordance with the interdigital shape.

CONSTITUTION: Transparent substrates 1a, 1b are placed opposite to each other. Seven external lead electrodes per one figure to be displayed are connected to a segmented electrode 9a, 9bW formed on the inside of the substrate 1b. Two external lead electrodes are connected to a common electrode 10a, 10b of an interdigital shape formed on the inside of the substrate 1b. For example, the segmented electrode 9 and the common electrode 10 are transparent indium oxide electrodes. A striped transparent colored layer 11a, 11bW is formed in accordance with the interdigital shape of the electrode 10. Each layer 11a is a red colored layer on the electrode 10a, and each layer 11b is a green colored layer on the electrode 10b.
