PURPOSE: To easily form a gas laser device having high durability by covering the surface of a discharge part made of high melting point metal with a coating layer containing at least one of chromium, cerium, and strontium, heat treating it, then removing the surface layer by polishing, and obtaining a desired element concentration.
CONSTITUTION: Tantalum of high melting point metal is shaped to form a discharge part 11c, and a chromium-plated layer 12 is formed on the entire surface except a bonded surface of the part 11c to a body. Further, it is heat treated to diffuse chromium from the layer 12 of the surface to the part made of the tantalum, and the chromium is doped to a desired depth to form a chromium doped layer 13. The layer of a region corresponding to a discharging surface is selectively removed by surface polishing to expose the layer 13 on the discharging surface, and bonded to the body to complete a discharge electrode.
