PURPOSE: To produce a polymer containing a functional terminal polymer in a high content, by polymerizing a cationially polymerizable monomer containing isobutylene using a specific agent to act as both an initiator and a chain transfer agent at the same time, a polymerization solvent and a Lewis acid.
CONSTITUTION: A cationically polymerizable monomer containing isobutylene is polymerized using an organic compound (A) having a group of the formula, which is an agent to act as both an initiator and a chain transfer agent at the same time, and a Lewis acid (B) to produce an isobutylene polymer having a halogen atom-based or an RCOO-group-based functional terminal, by using polymerization solvent comprising a mixture of 100pts.wt. halogenated hydrocar bon compound having two or less halogen atoms with 0.1W100pts.wt. halogenated hydrocarbon compound in which 2 or more halogen atoms bond to one carbon atom and which has 3 or more halogen atoms in the molecule.
