The direct type backlight unit 40 is provided with linear lamps 41 as a light source irradiating light, a diffusion plate 43 diffusing the light irradiated from the linear lamps 41, and reflecting plates 44 reflecting light, with the linear lamps 41 arranged between the reflecting plates 44. The diffusion plate 43 is provided with a plurality of micro lenses 30 of an ellipsoidal shape with a long axis 6 and a short axis 7, with a long-axis direction of the micro lenses 30 and that of the linear lamps 41 arranged crossing aslant.
