Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fabricate a needle having a blunt tip in an effective and economical manner and without dimensional variations by putting a tapered surgical needle for operations in a polishing medium and allowing the needle to come in contact with the polishing medium for a sufficient time to effectively altering the pointed and piercing tip into a blunt one. SOLUTION: A tapered needle 10 having a traditionally piercing distal point or tip-cut semi-finished tapered needle blank 15 having a cut tip 16 is mounted onto a polishing tool 20 which includes a polishing medium 40, such as aluminum oxide and ceramics, and additive 80. For the needle blank 15, the polishing tool 20 is adjusted to obtain a desired taper finished with the polishing tool 20. With the needle 10 or blank 15 placed in the tool 20, mechanical displacement such as rotation and oscillation is given to the tool 20 to cause the needle 10 to come in contact with the polishing medium 40 for a sufficient time to effectively producing a needle 60 having a blunt tip.
