PURPOSE: To maintain the accuracy of recognition of pattern/code signal conversion device by sending plural candidate character code signals to information processing device when a character on a mark sheet cannot be identified as a specific character or symbol.
CONSTITUTION: When a pattern signal in a character pattern storage buffer 10 cannot be identified as a specific character by collating the buffer 10 with identification dictionary 12 but there are plural number of candidate for it, the indication to that effect is made to candidate character flag display circuit 16, and displays the candidate characters to the candidate character/number storage buffer 17. After that, all of the candidate characters are stored at candidate character storage buffer 18 and they are sent to information processing device through information processing device signal buffer connection terminal 15 and signal buffer 8 of information processing device side. The information processing device 2 may automatically identify according to its own candidate character selection program, or may display the candidates on CRT or through a facsimile equipment so that one of the candidate characters can be selected by human judgement. By taking such procedures, the correct processing can be executed.
