Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continuously measure at high speeds a diameter and/or an eccentricity of a primary and a secondary coating layers during manufacturing an optical fiber.
SOLUTION: An image is formed on an optical detector disposed opposite to a light source and substantially perpendicularly to an axial direction of the optical fiber by projecting a beam of light from the light source through the optical fiber in the direction substantially perpendicularly to the axial direction of the optical fiber. The diameter and/or the eccentricity of the primary coating layer of the coated optical fiber is judged by analyzing the image by a signal processor. The image generated by the optical detector includes a first and a second bright lines at interfaces of the primary and the secondary coating layers. The diameter and/or the eccentricity of the primary coating layer is judged with the use of a relative position of the bright lines.
