To provide a method for calculating spark advance (ZW) for an internal combustion engine in connection with the operation conditions and knock signal K of the internal combustion engine; this method - in which the knock signal K indicates the knocking combustion of the internal combustion engine, while the spark advance degree is shifted in the retardation direction during the occurrence of knocking, and it is shifted to the advance direction when knocking does not occur - is arranged to be free from defects contained in conventional technology.
The advance direction adjustment of the spark advance degree is limited to the first required time (t1 to t2), but if no knocking (K) has occurred during the second required time (t3 to t4), which surpasses the first required time, the spark advance degree is adjusted so as to progress in the advance direction.
