PURPOSE: To interrupt a format process before the important information stored at the head of a format is destroyed by starting the format process from the end direction not from the leading direction.
CONSTITUTION: An address reducing means 13 sets a recording address 107, i.e. the output of a final address output means 11 as an initial address and reduces the internally stored address value by 1 with the following address reduction instruction 105 to output this reduced address as the address 107. A format information recording means 12 writes the format information 109 given from a format control means 15 into the address 107. Thus it is possible to start a format process in the end direction not from the leading direction where the important information is set and therefore to prevent the erasion of the important information due to a format interruption instruction received after the start of the reformat process.
