PURPOSE: To satisfactorily discriminate shape by using the shape description independent of the size and the direction of a two-dimensional shape pattern and obtaining the degree of difference between two shape patterns to discriminate the shape.
CONSTITUTION: A shape pattern extracting part 2 extracts a shape pattern in the picture of an image pickup part 1 in accordance with the timing signal from a timing signal generation part 9. In a shape description generating part 3, a projecting enclosure generating part generates the projecting enclosure of the shape pattern in the binary picture received from the shape pattern extracting part 2 to generate a binary picture where the inside of the projecting enclosure is set to value '1' and the other part is set to value '0'. Next, a projecting enclosure description generating part generates the description of the shape of the projecting enclosure. Finally, a recessed part description generating part generates the description of the recessed part of the shape pattern to the projecting enclosure. The description of the shape of the projecting enclosure and that of the recessed part of the shape pattern are used as the description of the shape of the shape pattern.
