To provide a method of manufacturing a methacrylic acid manufacturing catalyst which is capable of manufacturing a catalyst having a high bulk density with high reproducibility.
The method of manufacturing the methacrylic acid manufacturing catalyst containing an X element that is at least one element selected from the group consisting of silicon, titanium, germanium, arsenic, antimony and cerium, phosphorus, molybdenum and alkali metal includes the steps of: (i) adding a molybdenum raw material and X element raw material into water; (ii) adding an alkali metal raw material and depositing an alkali metal salt of a heteropoly acid; (iii) adding a phosphorus raw material; and (iv) drying the aqueous slurry or aqueous solution containing all the raw materials to obtain dry matter. In the aqueous slurry depositing the alkali metal salt of the heteropoly acid in the step (ii), the volume of particles of which the particle diameter is 0.01 to 0.25 μm occupies 40% or more in the volume of all particles.
