PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a widened strand capable of manufacturing stably even under a condition of high speed processing in the method for manufacturing the widened strand.SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a widened strand comprises letting a reinforcing fiber strand 1 pass through a thread path-restricting mechanism, a widening mechanism, and a guide mechanism in this order where a strand-reaching distance L, which is a distance between the thread path-restricting mechanism and the widening mechanism, satisfies a condition of not greater than 20 times a width of the reinforcing fiber strand before widening. Further, it is preferable that a strand-touching region of the widening mechanism has a convex shape, a strand-touching region of the guide mechanism has a shape having a plurality of concave and convex portions, and a convergence mechanism exists in advance of the thread path-restricting mechanism. In addition, it is preferable that the reinforcing fiber is a carbon fiber, the width of the reinforcing fiber before widening is 1 mm to 300 mm, and the thread path-restricting mechanism, widening mechanism, and the guide mechanism have shapes of roll or pin.
