PURPOSE: The reaction of 4-isopropenylphenol with an organic halide is effected in the presence of a base to produce readily high-purity title substance, which is a starting material of substituted phenol useful as a raw material for agricultural chemicals in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of a compound of formula I with an organic halide of R-X [R is formula II (X1 is H, halogen, trifluoromethyl, cyano, alkyl; X2 is H, halogen, nitrile, alkyl), formula III and IV; X is halogen] is conducted in the presence of a base to give the objective compound of formula V. In the reaction, the amount of the organic halide is more than twice, preferably more than thrice the molar quantity of the compound of formula I and the reaction temperature is 130W 160°C for 10W20hr. The base employed is a hydroxide or carbonate of alkali metal and the amount is more than the stoichiometric one. The use of a solvent helps the progress of smooth reaction.
