Title:
METHOD FOR PREPARATION OF ALCOHOLS
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3410120
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prepare alcohols by hydrogenating carbonyl compds. at eleveted temp. and superatmospheric pressure in the presence of a particular homogeneous catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Carbonyl compds. is hydrogeneted at a temp. of 20-200°C, preferably 50-150°C and a total pressure of 1-80 barr in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst having a source of a Group VII metal compd. (preferably palladium, platinum or rhodium) and a phosphine-based bidentate ligand, preferably a compd. of the formula (wherein R1-R4 are each a substitutable hydrocarbon group, or R1 and R2 and/or R3 and R4are taken together to form a substitutable bivalent hydrocarbon group, provided that at least one of R1-R4 is aliphat. group; X is a bivalent-linking group having 2-8C atoms in its cross-linkage), e.g. 1,3-bis(diisopropylphospino)propane to obtain an alcohol. As a starting carbonyl compd., an aldehyde prepd. by hydroformylating reaction of olefinically unsaturated compd. is preferably used.
