Abstract:
To provide a novel reductive coupling reaction for synthesizing a diol or a polydiol using a carbonyl compound as a starting material without using an expensive and harmful metallic compound nor using an expensive and harmful metal halide and without being restricted in an inert gas atmosphere necessary in the case of a prior art method.
The method for preparing a diol or a polydiol comprises a step of reductively coupling a carbonyl compound in water, in an organic solvent, or in a mixed solvent of water and an organic solvent using a 12CaO-7Al2O3 electride comprising electrons present in its cage at a concentration of higher than 1019 cm-3 and lower than 2.31021 cm-3 as a reducing agent.
