To provide a method for producing an alcoholic compound by subjecting a carboxylic acid compound to a hydrogen reduction, in which a solid catalyst supporting Ru and Mo capable of obtaining the alcoholic compound at a high yield in a mild condition can be determined by a simple measuring method.
The method for producing an alcoholic compound by bringing the carboxylic acid compound into contact with hydrogen in the presence of the solid catalyst supporting Ru and Mo on a carrier comprises (1) supporting Ru and Mo on a carrier so that Ru/Mo ratio is in the range of 0.2-5, and (2) subjecting the resultant supported catalyst to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and using a catalyst in which the Ru/Mo peak intensity ratio is controlled to be 0.6 or more in energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) of the observed particle section.
