To provide a method for producing a benzyl alcohol compound in high yield with high safety at a low cost by using sodium borohydride because a reaction for reducing a benzaldehyde compound with lithium aluminum hydride has a high risk due to an incompatible reaction with water and is not always satisfiable as an industrial method for producing the benzyl alcohol compound because of the expensive lithium aluminum hydride, etc., in the method for producing the benzyl alcohol compound.
This method for producing the benzyl alcohol compound represented by formula (I) (R is an alkyl substituted with fluorine atom and/or chlorine atom) is characterized as follows. The benzaldehyde compound represented by formula (II) [R is as previously defined] is reacted with the sodium borohydride.
