To provide a method for producing a high-purity carbon tetrachloride by which bromochoromethanes in crude carbon tetrachloride containing the bromochloromethanes, especially bromodichloromethane can extremely readily be converted into the carbon tetrachloride and the high-purity carbon tetrachloride realistically unachievable merely by simple distillation can be obtained.
This method is to produce the high-purity carbon tetrachloride from the crude carbon tetrachloride containing the bromochloromethanes. In the method, the crude carbon tetrachloride is irradiated with ultraviolet or visible radiation at 200-500 nm wavelength in the presence of chlorine and high-boiling substances, as necessary, are removed by distillation to provide the high-purity carbon tetrachloride.
