Abstract:
To obtain a benzyl alcohol from a dibenzyl ether under mild conditions and in a high yield.
In producing the benzyl alcohol represented by formula (1), the dibenzyl ether represented by formula (2) or a mixture of the dibenzyl ether and the benzyl alcohol represented by formula (3) is reacted with formic acid in the presence of one or more kinds of acids to give a formic acid benzyl ester represented by formula (4) and the formic acid benzyl ester is decomposed in the presence of one or more kinds of catalysts to give the benzyl alcohol.
