To provide a method for production with which hotrienol or a hotrienyl ester useful as a perfume ingredient can be mass-synthesized in high purity and yield at a low cost under mild conditions.

A 3-acyloxy-6-chloro-3,7-dimethyl-1,7-octadiene represented by formula (2) (wherein, R is a 1-4C alkyl group which may be branched or a phenyl group which may have a substituent) is dehydrochlorinated in the presence of a carbonate and a lithium halide in an amide solvent to produce a hotrienyl ester represented by formula (3) [wherein, R denotes the same meaning as that described in formula (2)]. The resultant hotrienyl ester is then subjected to solvolysis under alkaline conditions to afford the hotrienol.
