To provide a method of producing thymol in high yield that can suppresses formation of the position isomers of thymol difficult to be separated from each other because they have boiling points near to that of thymol and carrying out the reaction between m-cresol and i-propanol with no use of a toxic and corrosive catalyst, for example, cyclohexylamine in a small reactor.

This method of producing thymol is characterized by mixing m-cresol with i-propanol and allowing them to react with each other in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of calcium oxide, strontium oxide, barium oxide and tin oxide under the super-critical conditions of i-propanol.
