To strengthen the surface layer of light metal such as aluminum or magnesium or an alloy thereof so that the strengthening layer is in no danger of peeling off from a base material and a member surface which is homogeneous and has the same quality as the base material can be obtained.
Strengthening particles 6 of WC which are harder and have a higher specific gravity than a base material M of an aluminum alloy and which does not form an alloy with a metal element of the base material M are settled in the molten base material M with gravity to be deposited in the lower part of the molten part, then a floating layer 10 is formed which is made of the molten base material M floated on the upper side of the deposited layer 9 of the strengthening particles 6. The surface of the solidified floating layer 10 is then smoothed. Thus, the deposited layer 9 of the strengthening particles 6 formed in the base material M does not peel off, and a member surface which is homogeneous and has the same quality as the base material M can be obtained by the floating layer 10 of the base material M formed on the surface.
