To provide a method for suppressing the generation of hydrogen sulfide, capable of efficiently reducing the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in biogas generated in the methane fermentation of organic waste or organic wastewater and enabling the utilization of the energy of the biogas and the utilization of a biogas battery.
The amount of biogas generated in a methane fermentation tank, the content of methane gas in the biogas and the concentration of hydrogen sulfide are measured and air or oxygen is supplied into the methane fermentation tank corresponding to the measured values to rapidly lower the activity of sulfuric acid reducing bacteria to reduce the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the biogas to 50 ppm or less. The supply of oxygen or oxygen-containing air is stopped at the point of time when the generation amount of the biogas or the content of methane begins to lower by continuously performing the supply of oxygen or oxygen-containing air. Thereafter, the supply and stop operations of oxygen or oxygen-containing air are repeated to reduce the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the biogas without reducing the generation amount of the biogas generated by methane fermentation.
