Abstract:

To provide an interface and controller that reduce the number of individual buttons on a remote controller and enable efficient retrieval, selection and operation in a difficult interface, and also allow a user to look at a screen rather than the remote controller when performing the selection.

A user interface for multimedia centers advantageously utilizes handheld inertia-sensing user input devices to select channels and quickly retrieve the dense menus of options. Extensive use of the high resolution and bandwidth of such input devices is combined with strategies to avoid unintentional inputs and with intuitive interactive graphical displays.
