Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a fluorinated chiral liq. crystal usable as a dopant and giving a ferroelectric liq. crystal mixture applied to a display system.
CONSTITUTION: The fluorinated liq. crystal is a compd. of formula I [where 1≤n≤14; X is CH2 or O; Y is CO; and R is a group of formula II, CH(CH3)2 or C4H9; or X is CH2; Y is CH2; and R is CmH2m+1 (5≤m≤16)], e.g. 4-trans-(4- heptylcyclohexyl)ethyl-4'-(2-fluoro-3-methylpentanoyloxy)biphenyl. This compd. is obtd. by allowing 4-trans-(4-heptylcyclohexyl)ethyl-4'-hydroxybiphenyl derived from 4-hepthylbenzoic acid to react with 2-fluoro-3-methylpentanoic acid in the presence of methylene chloride, dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and piperidinopyridine.
