PURPOSE: To quickly, surely and automatically perform measuring area setting and focus adjustment in a convergence measuring preparation stage.
CONSTITUTION: Two-dimensional picture signals for which patterns for measurement displayed at a color CRT 11 are image picked up by a CCD 31 are divided into plural small areas by a picture data detection circuit 46 and prescribed picture data are detected for the respective small areas. A control part 44 generates picture information binarized for the respective small areas from the picture data and discriminates whether or not convergence measurement is possible from the picture information. When the convergence measurement is impossible by the discrimination, the display position of the pattern for the measurement is moved based on a control signal generated at a movement control signal generation circuit 50 so as to make the measurement possible and when the measurement is possible, the focus of an image forming optical system 32 is automatically adjusted through a focus control circuit 34 based on the control signal generated at a focus control signal generation circuit 49 using the picture signal of the small area to which the convergence measurement is to be performed.
