PURPOSE: To produce a antiulcer agent such as omeprazole by treating the corresponding compd. in which the part of sulfoxide is composed of sulfide with magnesium monoperoxyphthalate.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. of formula I [R1 and R2 are H, a 1-8C alkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, 2-8C fluoroalkyl or 1-8C alkoxy; R2 is R1, R3 or -O-(CH2)n-R6; R4 and R5 are each R1, R3, a -CH2-3-8C cycloalkyl, CF3, C (O) O-1-8C alkyl; R6 is -O-(CH2)p-R7, N-pyrrolidino, N-succinimidyl, formula II to formula IV or the like; R7 is OH, a 1-8C alkoxy, aryl, heteroaryl, halogen or the like; R11 and R12 are H or a 1-8C alkoxy; Y is CH or N; (n) and (p) are up to 5] and magnesium monoperoxyphthalate of 0.5 to 0.7 mol. equivalent to the mole number of the compd. are treated in a solvent to obtain the objective substituted 2-(2-pyridylmethylsulfinyl)benzimidazole of formula V or imidazopyridine such as omeprazole of formula VI.
