To provide a non-woven fabric for a battery separator having a small fiber diameter and a low basis weight, and excellent in strength, air permeability and solution retaining capability of an electrolyte.
This non-woven fabric for a battery separator is of a type containing, as a sheath component of a core-sheath composite fiber, a propylene-α-olefin random copolymer polymerized by a metallocene catalyst, having MFR of 5-2,000 g/10 min., a Q value of 1.5-4.0, Tm of 110-140°C, T80-T20 of 10°C or below, a soluble portion quantity of 3 wt.% or less at 0°C in TREF measurement, and the α-olefin content of 1-18 mol%. The non-woven fabric is characterized by being formed of a non-woven fabric wherein the ratio of the sheath part of the core-sheath composite fiber is 30-70 wt.%, the fiber diameter is 3-30 μm, and the basis weight of the non-woven fabric is 3-80 g/m2.
