With regard to operating an internal engine equipped with more than one cylinder (Z0,... Z3) through an almost constant torque, although the injection valve is closed with no fuel supplied to the cylinder, the attached suction valve and exhaust valve function normally, so that the suction of fresh gas into the combustion chamber of the cylinder, to which fuel supply has been stopped, and exhaustion of fresh gas from the combustion chamber are still continued, and fuel supply to an appropriate cylinder in the internal combustion engine is stopped before the shutoff of at least one fixed cylinder (Z1, Z3).
