To provide an optical recording and reproducing equipment that can discriminate the kind of an optical disk in a short time after loading the optical disk and before the execution of a focus search, a discrimination method of optical disk and a starting method of the optical recording and reproducing equipment.
An optical head 6 is equipped with a LED optical sensor detecting the reflected light amount of the LED light radiated to and reflected from an optical disk surface 6a and moves from the innermost circle position toward the outside by a spindle motor 3 and a guide screw 5A while the LED light is radiated toward the optical disk surface 2a from the LED optical sensor 8. An optical disk discrimination means 11 can discriminate many kinds of optical disks at the same time based on the changes of differential signal of distribution in the reflected light amount on the optical disk surface 2a received from the LED optical sensor 8.
