To provide an optical repeater and an optical repeating system employing a technique of directly amplifying an optical signal, which can monitor the status of an optical communication line with high accuracy.
This optical repeater and an optical repeating system are provided with: an optical amplifier for amplifying a signal light consisting of a main signal light and a monitoring signal light having different wavelengths for at least any one of two opposite optical communication lines using this signal light; an optical branching device for branching a part of this signal light; a light shielding means for allowing the branched signal lights to pass or shielding them; a wavelength selecting type reflecting means for selectively reflecting only the monitoring signal light among this transmitting signal lights; an optical transfer path for transmitting the signal light to the opposite optical communication line again via the optical shielding means and the optical branching device; and an optical composing device for transmitting the monitoring signal light transmitted to this optical transfer path to the other optical communication line.
