With a direct-coupled clutch 36 in a differential gear 3 serving as a torque combining mechanism disengaged, and with the input shafts of an engine 1, a motor/generator 2 and a manual transmission 4 are respectively isolated; and an operational condition of the motor/generator 2 and the engine 1 is controlled to meet manual transmission operation. In shifting out of the gear, a motor/generator torque TM/G is set to zero and the engine 1 is idling. In putting in gear, a motor/generator torque TM/G and an engine torque TE are controlled to synchronize the RPM of the transmission input shaft to the RPM, corresponding to the vehicle speed and the target transmission gear ratio. Switches are provided on a select lever and around it to detect intention of a speed change, jump-out-of-gear, a target gear and putting-in-gear.
