PURPOSE: To prevent the rupture of elements in a circuit upon opening of the elements in the circuit by a method wherein the opening of the elements in the circuit is detected by a protecting circuit and the operation of a switching regulator is stopped.
CONSTITUTION: When a flywheel diode 6 is opened, a protecting circuit 10 rectifies the waveform of the collector voltage of a switching transistor 2. This voltage is compared with an output voltage in a comparing circuit 5 whereby the flywheel diode 6 is detected whether it is opened or not. When the flywheel diode is opened, a switching control circuit 3 stops the operation of the switching transistor 2. According to this operation, an overvoltage, applied between the emitter and the collector of the switching transistor 2 upon opening the flywheel diode 6, may be prevented and whereby the heat generation, deterioration and rupture of the switching transistor 2 may b. prevented. The protecting circuit 10 is constituted of a rectifying circuit 4, the comparing circuit 5 and the switching control circuit 3.
