Abstract:

PURPOSE:To prepare the title macromonomer having an improved copolymerizability with a monomer having a low radical reactivity by subjecting a 2-oxazoline compd. to a living polymn. in the presence of a specific cationic polymn. initiator. CONSTITUTION:A 2-oxazoline compd. of formula I [wherein R<2> is H, (substd.) alkyl, or (substd.) aryl] or a mixture thereof with a 2-oxazoline compd. of formula II [wherein R<3> is H, (substd.) alkyl other than R<2>, or (substd.) aryl] is subjected to a living polymn. in the presence of a cationic polymn. initiator comprising a compd. of formula III (wherein R<1> is H or methyl; X is an electron- attracting group; and (l) is 1 or 2) in an inert gas atmosphere in a solvent such as acetonitrile at 0-120 deg.C to give a poly(N-acylethyleneimine) macromonomer of formula IV (wherein (m) is 1-1000, and (n) is 0-1000) having an unsatd. ester group. The macromonomer is copolymerized with a radical- or anionically polymerizable monomer (e.g. styrene) to give a copolymer having a poly(N-acylethyleneimine) deriv. chain of formula V as a graft chain.
