PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polyester having improved alkali resistance and high polymerization degree industially, by subjecting a specific acid halide and a dihydric phenol to polycondensation in a solution state in the presence of a tertiary amine in a specified polymerization solvent.
CONSTITUTION: (A) An acid halide (preferably X is Cl) shown by the formula (X is halogen; R1WR4 are H or 1W5C alkyl; m is 1 or 2) or a mixture of it and an acid halide of an aromatic bifunctional carboxylic acid and (B) a dihydric phenol(preferably bisphenol A are subjected to polycondensation in a solution state in (C) a halogen-substituted hydrocarbon (e.g., methyl chloride, etc.) and/or halogen-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g., benzene, etc.) as a polymerization solvent in the presence of (D) a tertiary amine (e.g., trimethylamine, etc.) catalyst, to give the desired polyester.
