Abstract:

PURPOSE: To ensure high density and high strength by mixing baron carbide powder with a preceramic organosilicon polymer to obtain a prescribed compsn., compacting the mixture and sintering the resultant compact in an inert atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Boron carbide powder is blended with a preceramic organosilicon polymer selected from the group consisting of polysiloxanes, polysilazanes, polysilanes, metallopolysiloxanes and metallopolysilanes. The blend is homogeneously mixed to obtain a mixture contg. ≥0.2 wt.% free carbon based on the total weight of charcoal derived from the boron carbide powder and the preceramic organosilicon polymer. The mixture is compacted at ≤500°C and the resultant compact is sintered at ≥2,200°C in an atmosphere of argon or the like to produce the objective boron carbide sintered ceramic body having ≥2.0 g/cm3 density.
