Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compounds which are dimerized hydrates of butadiene and useful as an intermediate, etc., for n-octanol in high yield by reacting 1,3-butadiene with water in the presence of a Pd compound, a specific phosphine compound and carbon dioxide.
CONSTITUTION: An autoclave is charged with a bis(phosphine)palladium complex composed of (A) a palladium compound (e.g. palladium acetate), and (B) a phosphine compound of the formula (R1, R5 and R9 are hydrocarbon; at least one of R2, R3, R4, R6, R7, R10, R11 and R12 is electron donative substituent group and H or substituent group) [e.g. tris(2,4-dimethylphenyl)phosphine] as a catalyst and (C) carbon dioxide. 1,3-Butadiene is then allowed to react with water at 80°C temperature for 2hr. Thereby, the resultant catalyst is circulated for reuse without deteriorating its activity to afford the objective octadienols which are dimerized hydrates of butadienes and useful as an intermediate for producing n-octanol and its ester, etc.
