This 2-(alkoxymethyl)acrolein of the formula (R is a 1-6C alkyl, a 3-6C alkoxyalkyl) is obtained by reacting acrolein with at least the equimolar amount of an alcohol of the formula: ROH and the equimolar amount of a formaldehyde-supplying source in the presence of a catalytic amount of a catalyst system based on a secondary amine and a mineral acid in a reaction mixture pH value of 1-7 at 20-100°C. The alcohol used in the reaction and the formaldehyde-supplying source are preferably a 1-4C primary or secondary alcohol and formaldehyde polymer, respectively. The molar ratio of the acrolein: the alcohol is preferably 1:2 to 1:10.
