Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a 2-aryl-ethanol of high purity by subjecting a 2-aryl- acetoaldehyde-acetal to catalytic hydrogenation at high pressure and high temp. in an acidic medium.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. expressed by formula I or formula II is subjected to hydrogenation under 0.1 to 10 MPa, preferably 0.1 to 2.0 MPa hydrogen pressure, at 40 to 150°C, preferably 60 to 100°C in the presence of water, hydrogen and a ruthenium catalyst to obtain a compd. expressed by formula III or formula IV. In formula I or II, R1 is H, a 1-6C straight-chain or branched- chain alkyl, a 1-6C straight-chain or branched-chain alkoxy, a perhalogen alkyl, carboxy-methoxy, carboxy-ethoxy or OH; R2 is a 1-6C straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl; (n) is 1 to 5; (m) is 1 to 3.
